Fresno Laptop Selection & Installation: Looking for help with laptop selection?

So you’re in the market for a shiny new laptop. You head on over to your local Best Buy and stride purposefully to the laptop section. You’re on a mission to make a smart laptop selection, complete your purchase, and get home in time for the next thrilling episode of MacGyver.

But disaster strikes!

Gazing across row on row of laptops, their screensavers dancing majestically, you’re hit with a crippling blast of analysis paralysis. How in the great heavens do you begin to make a smart laptop selection? Why is that one bigger than the other ones? How come that black one over there has a trapezoid-shaped slot while all these pretty silver ones have a boring rectangle? Where’s the on switch? Argh!

Laptop selection can be downright intimidating — especially if you haven’t done it before.

We can help.

Nerds On Call is a local Fresno company with a long track record of helping customers with their computing needs, starting with our ultra-helpful and super-accessible laptop selection and laptop installation service.

All you have to do is give us a call at 1-800-919-6373 or fill out our contact form asking for help with laptop selection or laptop installation. A helpful nerd will show up at your door (or nearest computer store) ready to share their computer smarts with you.

Here’s a quick overview of the kinds of decisions we’ll help you make.

First laptop selection decision: its operating system

Some people will tell you that you really must choose one operating system over another. In our experience, you can make a smart laptop selection that uses any of the major operating systems out there. Each has its own unique strengths and weaknesses.

  • A Mac OS machine is a great laptop selection if you’re looking for a straightforward interface, problem-free laptop installation, and limited ongoing maintenance.
  • A Microsoft Windows machine is a solid laptop selection if you prefer flexibility in how you set up your environment and have an interest in a wide range of software titles.
  • Chrome OS is perfectly acceptable if you’re on a limited budget and need a solid computer to perform basic computing tasks like word processing and web browsing.

Any computer store in Fresno will carry at least a few machines using these operating systems for you to road test. If you’ve asked one of our nerds to help you with laptop selection, we’ll show you each of the operating environments in action and show you how to carry out laptop installation and day-to-day tasks.

Processor choice

Another important step in laptop selection is to carefully consider your performance requirements. If you intend to perform demanding processor work like 3d-modeling or gaming, you’ll be better off purchasing a more powerful CPU. On the other hand, if a bit of casual word processing and web browsing is more your speed, an entry-level CPU will be sufficient and much less expensive.

Remember, you always have the option to call Nerds On Call at 1-800-919-6373. We’ll happily help you refine your laptop selection parameters or schedule a house call to help with laptop installation.

Other considerations

Your remaining laptop selection and decisions come down to three factors: Your computing interests, your budget, and whether you prefer to tackle laptop installation all at once or gradually over time.

Here are some good rules of thumb:

  • Display: If your laptop selection budget can accommodate a larger screen, it’s a great upgrade to consider, especially if you plan to mainly use your laptop at a comfortable desk. Selecting a smaller screen laptop is ideal if you plan to use your laptop in a wide range of locations. The smaller your laptop, the less likely you’ll accidentally damage it when moving about.
  • RAM: If you need more speed from your computer, invest in a bit of extra RAM (or Random Access Memory). At the same time, however, remember that over-investing in hardware you don’t need is a common laptop selection blunder. If in doubt, ask us for advice, and remember that most computers will be built so that you can request a laptop installation of additional RAM later on.
  • Hard drive: You can always have a Fresno nerd help you out with a bigger hard drive laptop installation if you run out of hard drive space. So, our advice is not to invest too much on upgrading your hard drive initially. A one or two-terabyte drive is usually more than sufficient.
